Monthly Service Opportunities
Churches United Shelter
Churches United’s mission is to provide free shelter to homeless adults regardless of physical or emotional conditions, and to facilitate their move toward self-sufficiency. The primary goals of the shelter are to: 1) Provide safe emergency shelter, and meals to homeless men & women 2) Provide resource assistance to clients to move above and beyond homelessness.
We are still in need of volunteers to provide bars/cookies for the shelter, however, we ask for specific amounts to cover the cost of other items.
Envelopes can be found on the Churches United table, so that you can contribute additional funds to the project.
St. Mark will be serving meals at the Churches United Shelter on June 6th at 6:30pm. Please join us in serving this important ministry!
How many campers can we support this year?
The community service focus for June is Camp Hertko Hollow, started in 1968 by Dr. Ed Herko with 37 kids attending for one week, and is now celebrating it’s 41st year! The camp is a non-profit organization to which you can give tax deductible gifts. Diabetes affects many, many children and there is no cure in sight. The campers need to learn how to live with diabetes and have happy, healthy, and productive lives.
The #1 purpose of the camp is for kids to HAVE FUN! Kids with diabetes need to have camping fun just like any other kids. The #2 purpose for Diabetic Education. It is important that somebody educate them on how to live with their disease. Funding for the camp comes solely from contributions which help cover the cost for kids who can not afford to pay $650. Almost 90% of those attending camp receive some form of financial help. The camp has never had to turn a child away. Members may write their checks directly to Camp Hertko Hollow, or to St Mark Lutheran with a note in the memo line. Last year we raised $1300.00, so let’s try for $1950.00 this year!
